Dr Nicholas Wright, MBChB, FRNZCGP
Dr Nick Wright is a graduate of University of Otago Medical School and a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. He has had an interest in lifestyle medicine since medical school. During training he interned with with Dr McDougall, and at TrueNorth Health Centre with Drs. Goldhamer, Lisle and Klaper. He has also worked extensively in rural communities in New Zealand, including in Balclutha with Dr Sijnja, and six years working as a doctor in Gisborne.
In 2013 he began work on the BROAD study, as voluntary research project to see how to apply a plant-based diet in Gisborne, which has the country’s highest rates of diabetes and obesity. He was lead author on the BROAD study, published in 2017. It revealed the highest weight loss for any trial of its kind.
In 2017 he was honoured with a Local Hero Medal for his contributions to charity. Dr Wright is a keen amateur surfer and gardener.
Ms Morgen Smith, B.Sc. Spec. Hons (Cum Laude)
Morgen Smith graduated Cum Laude from York University with a specialised honours degree in Kinesiology and Health Science.
Morgen is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, with the National Strength and Conditioning Association of America – a world-recognised certifying body for fitness professionals.
Morgen ran the BROAD research, and has continued on as programme director and lead researcher for the EDGE research.
In previous work, Morgen focused on one-on-one personal training for clients of all ages, stages and abilities. For the past several years Morgen has organized and run a plant-based lifestyle change programme in the community, working with groups of 20-30 patients per session. Plant Based Videos was based on this wealth of knowledge and her experiences.

NZMA: Member of the New Zealand Medical Association, which is “…the country’s foremost pan-professional medical organisation in New Zealand representing the collective interests of all doctors”
ACLM: Member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine is involved with “…quality education and certification of the practice in clinical lifestyle medicine”. This college does not offer formal training in New Zealand, but instead provides an opportunity to stay connected with lifestyle medicine practitioners the world over.
MCNZ: Dr Wright is a practising doctor in New Zealand enrolled with the Medical council of New Zealand under general registration. He is currently training as a Registrar with the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.
Ms Morgen Smith
CSCS: Certified strength and conditioning specialist from the National strength and conditioning association (founded in U.S.). This is a globally recognised post graduate specialisation in strength conditioning for those who “…apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance”.
